Getting started

What is the International Math Bee®?

International Math Bee® (IMB) is a global educational game-based learning platform that helps elementary math students build fundamental math skills through play. Founded in 2006 by Dr. S. David Vaillancourt as the nonprofit National Math Bee®, IMB has grown into a worldwide platform reaching students in over 20 countries.

BatterUp® is the math baseball game that powers the International Math Bee®. Students in grades 1 to 6 answer math questions to get hits, score runs and build their batting average, then see how they rank among peers worldwide.

Grades 1 to 6. Students are ranked against other students in the same grade.

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each has its own game mode.

  1. Create a free Parent/Teacher account at https://portal.internationalmathbee.org.
  2. Add your school and your students.
  3. Buy one seat per student and assign it.
  4. Students log in and play at https://game.internationalmathbee.org.

No. Every student account is created by a parent, guardian or teacher in the Parent/Teacher Portal.

Yes. In the Students menu, click Upload CSV to add many students at once.

Yes. Create a Parent/Teacher account and add your homeschool as your school.

Pricing and seats

How much does it cost?

US$2.99 per seat per month, or US$32.00 per seat per year (save 11%). The Parent/Teacher account itself is free.

A seat lets one student play. Buy as many seats as you need, then assign each seat to a student. You can unassign a seat and give it to another student at any time. One seat covers one student at a time.

No. You are charged when you buy seats.

Securely through Stripe, directly in the Parent/Teacher Portal, by card, Apple Pay or Link. We never see or store your full card number.

Prices are set in US dollars. Depending on where you are, Stripe may show and charge the price in your local currency at the current exchange rate, so the exact amount can vary slightly.

Yes, until you cancel. You can cancel or switch between monthly and yearly billing in the Subscriptions menu.

In the Parent/Teacher Portal, open Subscriptions and cancel your seats or your subscription. Your seats stay active until the end of the billing period and are not renewed.

At this time, refunds are not available. You can remove seats at any time, and they stay active until the end of the billing period you already paid for.

Yes. Seats are paid directly in the portal, and every payment appears in Billing History with a downloadable invoice. If your school needs something more, write to us at buzz@internationalmathbee.org.

Playing BatterUp®

How do students play?

Students log in at https://game.internationalmathbee.org, choose a game mode and tap Pitch! Every game has 9 innings with 5 math questions per inning. The faster and more accurately they answer, the bigger the hit: single, double, triple or home run. Students get 3 tries per question, and missed questions come back if there is time left.

BatterUp® runs in the web browser on phones, tablets and computers, with an internet connection. There is nothing to download from an app store. On a phone or tablet you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.

A few short games a day is a great start. Every game only takes a few minutes. The more often your child practices, the faster they will develop their basic math fact skills.

The batting average only updates when all 9 innings are completed. If a game is stopped partway, it does not count.

Make sure the student has an assigned seat (their status should say Active in the Students menu), and that they are using the username and password you created. Students keep the password you created. If they forget it, you can reset the student’s password in the portal with the pencil icon next to the student.

Rankings and progress

How do the rankings work?

Students are ranked by batting average against other students in the same grade at the State, National Math Bee® and International Math Bee® levels. Rankings update in real time and show usernames only.

After completing a full 9 inning game in a math mode. Each math mode has its own scoreboard.

Batting averages normally show 3 decimals. Switch on Full Batting Avg. to see all 20 decimals, which shows exactly who ranks ahead when students have the same 3 decimal average.

In the Parent/Teacher Portal you can see each student’s batting average by game mode, filter by grade, and view your students’ rankings and the global ranking for their grade.

Their current Parent/Teacher can transfer them to the new Parent/Teacher in the portal. The student keeps their account and batting average.

Privacy

Who can see my child’s information?

You can see the information for the students on your account. On the scoreboards, other users only see usernames and batting averages. We never share one family’s or school’s information with another.

The parent or teacher enters the student’s first and last name, username, class grade, date of birth, a contact phone number and school. Email and gender are optional. This information stays private in your Parent/Teacher Portal and is not shown publicly in the game. Public leaderboards only show usernames and batting averages.

Choose a username that does not include the child’s real name.

Tournaments and contact

Are there tournament seasons?

Not at this time. Rankings are live and update instantly every time a student completes a game, all year round.
